Kubu Dama is a home shaped by cultural memory and designed for a progressive, wide-minded Balinese family. Its name Kubu means house, and Dama, the name of the family’s son, reflects a vision of rooted continuity: a place that honors legacy while nurturing the future.
This residence responds to the rich complexity of traditional Balinese life. Spatial arrangements are guided by customary orientations and ceremonial needs. A sacred family temple sits outside the main building, following time-honored practice. Its design features porcelain plate inlays, an homage to 1800s Balinese temples influenced by Bali-Tiongkok culture.

Below the temple is a practical but respectful space for preparing “banten” as daily offerings essential to Balinese ritual life. This position folds it into the spatial flow, allowing sacred and supporting activities connected.
The program reflects multigenerational living. A suite on the first floor that can accommodate the grandparents or guests, offering privacy while staying close to the center of family life. Upstairs, the master bedroom includes a custom expansion bed for the toddler, blending familial warmth and long-term flexibility into everyday living.

A vertical laundry chute connects the private zone directly to the service area below, enhancing functionality without disrupting the home’s serenity. Even the family’s cat has its own dedicated corner.
Materiality grounds the project in place. Locally quarried white stone forms the building’s façade. This natural finish responds to the limestone terrain of Ungasan and allows the house to harmonize with the surrounding environment, both visually and materially.
Kubu Dama is not merely a modern home. It is a vessel for culture, care, and continuity. It listens to its past, serves its present, and prepares for the lives that will grow within it.
